About Us

SToC School

St. Thomas of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School established to serve the three contributory parishes of St. Thomas of Canterbury, St. Edmund and St. James the Great.

It is very highly rated and is an important part of our parish community. We take very seriously a real partnership of home-school-parish,and promote a range of activities to ensure this, including:

- meetings of new-intake parents are held in the parish hall (the Becket Suite).

- the children's annual Carol Service and Lenten Service are held in church, packed with parents and parishioners.

- the Parish Programme of Sacramental Initiation preparing for the sacraments of Penance and First Communion which is well supported by school and parish together.

- the monthly parish Sunday Mass known as the "Family Mass" in which the children take a leading role with readings, prayers and choice of hymns.

The members of the Governing Body are all parishioners of St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish.
Chairman of Governors is Mr. James Sharples who can be contacted through the school address.

In the July 2014 Ofsted Inspection the school was highly praised, not only for the good progress of pupils, sound teaching, wide range of activities, but also for "the exceptionally rich and varied curriculum (which) makes use of sport and high quality art and music provision to promote pupils' enjoyment of learning".
"Strong leadership" and "highly effective teamwork between all staff", "excellent relationships between adults and pupils", "highly effective support of governors" and confident relationships with parents, all contribute to our successful school.

The March 2015 R.E. Inspection reported "St Thomas of Canterbury is an outstanding Catholic Primary school. There is a genuinely warm and friendly welcome given to all. All children are offered a Catholic education in a caring and supportive environment where differences are welcomed and celebrated."
It lists a number of outstanding features  "which support the children’s faith journey; (and) ensure that all children receive a vibrant Catholic Education."
